Live Life with Humour
Question for you…
Do you laugh at yourself?
Not in the way of standing in the bathroom looking at yourself in the mirror while you recite a standup comedy routine.
But I mean do you laugh at your own mistakes, missed steps or miss heard situations?
I think humour is a wonderful way to deal with these things, and perfect for not taking ourselves or life too seriously.
To me humour is a number one quality I look for in someone. If they can laugh at themselves and make me laugh, then chances are they are my kind of people. Unless of course if the humour is coming from a place of mean or bullying. Then that’s a hard pass for me.
Whether it’s an involved joke, or quick wit, it’s such a gift to be able to laugh at yourself or make someone else laugh.
I remember sitting around the family dining room table at holiday time and my Dad, a man of few words, but with one hell of a sense of humour, would come out with some quick witted comment, just as we all had our mouths full. I swear he did it on purpose. We’d laugh and food would fly out of our mouths and end up on the other side of the table, or we’d choke on it, and milk would fly from the kid’s noses! Ahhh…good times, good memories.
So passing on the laughter gene is important to me.
The ability to laugh at yourself reminds those around you that when things don’t go as planned, it isn’t the end of the world.
Just laugh it off. Life your life with humour!
Some examples of times I’ve decided to laugh at myself include…
I went to Wally World one day, kind of spur of the moment thing. I got out of the car and while walking across the parking lot I thought before I looked down….”Oh please don’t let me be wearing my slippers.”
Yep I was wearing my slippers, somehow I forgot to put my shoes on before I left the house.
Oh well, it was only Wally World. I laughed out loud all the way to the entrance. No one here is going to notice or care.
Years ago I was shoveling snow, I did my driveway and the ten miles of front sidewalk. Then I decided to do the driveways of both nearby neighbours. The first driveway went quickly no problems. But the second neighbour’s driveway was on a bit of a slope, and they were seniors so I didn’t want them to fall as it was icy as well.
Yep, you guessed it, I fell. I went down fast and landed on my back. Now I could have had the “what the hell” thoughts, “here I am trying to do something helpful, and I end up falling!”
But instead I lay there laughing and I ended up making a snow angel! I fell, and it wasn’t the end of the world.
I also laughed at myself just yesterday. I swatted a fruit fly while I had my ear pods in as I was using my tablet. I smacked myself a good one in the ear and muted my video I was watching! I had no idea I could mute the sound that way. You learn something new every day!
I could have said…”How stupid can you be to not know that.” But instead I decided to laugh it off.
And don’t get me started on the back and forth I have with my Dude, neither of us hear perfectly, so it’s comical what we think each other is saying sometimes. It’s like a game of cup and string telephone. Young ones can google that game.
So my lesson is to not take life so seriously, laugh it off when things don’t go right.
Getting stressed out about things just isn’t worth it.
If we laughed at ourselves, and made those close to us laugh more, we’d all be better off.

* Learn to laugh at yourself, it will ease the stress of the situation and show others they can do the same.

Well that’s it for this week. I think I’ll watch a few funny videos.
