Finding Peace in Imperfection

Finding Peace in Imperfection

It’s so easy to forget that the most beautiful meaningful things in our lives are free and imperfect.

But we live in a world that seeks perfection above all else.

I have three simple free joys that we should be seeking and embracing instead.

The first one is nature, my go to for zen.

I often step outside at sunset and marvel and offer gratitude for the beautiful pinks, golds and blues of a sunset sky.

And I do the same for a starry clear night when Grandmother Moon is casting her glorious glow in the yard.

When I walk in the woods, I find myself drawn to the peeling bark of a tree, the imperfect petals of spring wildflowers and I love a gnarly tree.

Nature is not flawless.

It’s unpredictable, wild and always changing.

Nature shines on regardless of whether it is perfect or not.

We could all take a lesson from that!

A walk in nature is free and does the body and soul so much good.  I offer thanks as I wander and always take time to stop and have “a moment” of gratitude and reflection.

My second free and flawed gift to be grateful for is Love and Relationships.

Whether it’s family, friend or a partner, true love is never perfect.

The idea that love is flawless and always perfect sets one up for failure.  Relationships of any kind always have ups and downs, give and take.

But make sure things balance out, if a relationship is always one sided or you feel disrespected a lot of the time, then maybe it’s time to rethink what you want and deserve in a relationship.

My last imperfect and free gift I’m grateful for is Laughter.

It is the most wonderful free treasure we have.

Spending time with your favourite people giggling about the smallest things, or tripping over your own feet and being able to “stick the landing” as I say is absolutely priceless to me.

Laughing at our imperfections gets even better as we age.

I told Bestie J about having a hair blowing in my face on one of my walks, I couldn’t get it off my face.  Low and behold I had to remove it with tweezers, as it had gotten stuck in one of my “deep ditch wrinkles” by my eye!

We did some serious laughing over that one!

We age, we are imperfect, and we laugh at ourselves.

And as we age we have to remember to appreciate the simple joys in life.

We get to embrace life as a child and not care what others think.  So jump in the puddles, stop and watch the butterflies.  Enjoy the warmth of the sun, the sound of the rain, the scent of flowers in the garden and the big hugs from friends.  All these things are free and do the soul so much good.

Accept that true beauty doesn’t have to be perfect, not in the world around us and especially not in ourselves!

So live your life with joy and gratitude, embracing all the imperfections that life has to offer!
