Climbing Out of Rabbit Holes
Rabbit holes. We’ve all fallen in them. That place where the negative, downward spiraling thoughts take us.
Like a slippery slope covered in mud, once you start slipping down a rabbit hole, it’s hard to stop and harder to get back up.
Every thought, everything you’ve done wrong or think you have, pops in your head, and if not the negative, then just one topic after another. It spirals backward from what you did yesterday and keeps going until you finally end up as a child. And the amazing part is that it all happens in seconds.
It happens that way for me anyway, and I can’t be the only one.
Now for me it’s been happening along with insomnia, I’m putting that down to the age thing. Again I can’t be the only one.
After a few sleepless nights lately I had decided enough was enough. I was seeing myself sliding down the rabbit hole, and thought…
Well if I can imagine or visualize myself sliding down, then why not visualize myself climbing back out?
I needed to feel like I was in control of the situation and right my ship.
So that’s what I did.
And this is what I visualized.
I hit the bottom of the rabbit hole, and since it’s dark down there, I needed to visualize a light source, so I felt around until I found a wall switch and turned it on.
And then I was able to see a ladder, I started up the ladder and thought, I can do this, I can climb my way out! And suddenly another light came on up the ladder. So with each positive thought I spoke out loud more lights came on to guide me up and it felt less scary than the slide down.
I made it to the top, climbed out and there was a shovel on the ground. So I used the shovel to fill in the rabbit hole. I felt better, less anxious and more relaxed.
You know what, this worked for me!
Will there be other rabbit holes?
Yes, more than likely, it’s just how my brain is wired.
But I will use visualization to get me out, or I’ll come up with new positive thoughts to fend them off before I slip and fall.
I’ll end with this, because I’m all about making a sweet lemon cocktail from a sour life lemon.
I did have a positive come from my rabbit hole adventure. During my rambling thoughts I did get two ideas for future articles. I even remembered them in the morning!
So that is the lemon cocktail to the sour lemon that life threw at me in the way of a rabbit hole!
